Graphic Design

We design the magazine's section structure, typography and image layout together. We prepare page templates that you can reuse in future issues.

Which magazine pages do we design?

01

Cover

We put the issue's main story on the cover. We set up a layout for the masthead, issue details and headlines that can carry through to future issues.

Magazine cover: logo, issue details, feature topic and two featured articles
02

Contents

With section names, page numbers and short descriptions, the reader quickly finds the article they want.

Contents page: section names, page numbers and small images
03

Long-form article pages

We set column widths, line lengths and paragraph spacing for comfortable reading, using subheadings and pull quotes to support the flow.

Spread from a food article: full-page photo, headline, introduction and two columns of text
04

Interview pages

We distinguish questions and answers with separate type styles and use portraits and other images to support the interview's subject.

Interview spread: question-and-answer layout and ceramics photographs
05

A system for future issues

We define the heading styles and page templates. We can then build later issues on this base, with layouts that suit the new content.

Typography and page system: heading, introduction, body and quote styles, six-column grid

Plan and type styles come first.

The order of the sections and the place of each article are set before design begins.

More about this service

We design magazine and newsletter covers, articles, interviews and picture pages within a shared publication identity. We prepare the page plan around the readers, the content types and how often the publication comes out.

Page and typography system

We define styles for headlines, introductions, body text, quotes and captions. We set column widths and spacing for comfortable reading and keep navigation elements in consistent places.

Layouts for each content type

We plan how questions and answers are set apart in interviews, how text flows in long articles and the order of images in photo features. Within shared design rules, we prepare pages that suit each piece of content.

Checks and delivery

We work with approved copy, author names and images cleared for use. We check text overflow, page numbers, the contents page and photo credits. Editing and new content production are scoped separately.

We prepare the print files to suit the format, binding and printer's requirements. We set up the digital PDF separately for screen use and a shareable file size. The source files and templates can be used to prepare future issues.

See catalogue design for product-led publications and brand identity design for a broader visual system.

Frequently asked questions

How do magazine and catalogue design differ?

In a magazine, we plan the reading flow across articles, interviews and photographs. In a catalogue, the focus is on finding and comparing products. We set the page structure according to the purpose of the publication.

Does all the copy need to be final?

Section titles and approximate text lengths may be enough for initial planning. Final layouts and print files require approved copy. Major content changes can affect page count and schedule.

Can interviews and articles have different layouts?

Yes. We create layouts for each content type while keeping typography, colour and navigation consistent across the publication.

Is editorial work included?

During page design, we check the layout and any text overflow. We scope copy editing, fact-checking and new content separately. At the start, we agree who will approve the content.

Can the magazine be digital-only?

Yes. We prepare the magazine for on-screen use, including its dimensions, readability, links and file size. If you're thinking of printing it later, just let us know at the start.

Can future issues use the same design?

Yes. Templates and type styles provide a basis for future issues. We can add layouts for new content types and plan any major visual redesign separately.
